Конференцията "АЕЦ 'Белене': между референдума и стратегическата рационалност", организирана от Института за регионални и международни изследвания (ИРМИ) с подкрепата на Фондация 'Америка за България" на 19 септември в София, предизвика широк интерес в българската общественост. Освен че участие взеха утвърдени експерти, политици и дипломати, присъстваха и голям брой представители на медиите.

The Institute for Regional and International Studies (IRIS) organised on 19 September a conference/discussion on the economic, technological and geostrategic aspects of the recently revived project for a second nuclear power plant in Bulgaria in Belene (in Northern Bulgaria, at the river Danube). The Russo-Bulgarian project had its origins back in the 1980s but was frozen and brought to life again by the government of Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha in the early 2000s. It was strongly pushed forward by the subsequent Socialist-led government in 2005-09. After the current centre-right GERB party cabinet suspended the project in March 2012 for being economically and ecologically untenable and for presenting real security risks for the country and its population, the Bulgarian Socialist Party, now in opposition, collected over 700,000 signatures with the aim to call a referendum ‘for’ or ‘against’ Belene.
